Striped Pajamas
$84

the stuff:

Okay, yes, there's a 85% chance the girl you give these to will make a jailbird joke within seconds of opening them.  Just smile and tell her to put them on.  As soon as she realizes you've given her the most comfortable pair of pajamas she's ever owned, she won't be thinking about the fact that she looks like Bugs Bunny in the episode when he accidentally ends up in Sing Song Prison--she'll be too busy ordering another pair.  Made of 100% organic cotton that gets softer every time you wash it (for real), these PJs won't just go in her nightwear rotation; they'll easily become the only pair she wears (they're on sale right now so you might as well get her a backup set--they come in cute stars, too).

the story

These pajamas are made of non-toxic fibers that won't give you nightmares. But all of your PJs are made of cotton, you say.  Well, unless it's organic cotton, you'd be better off sleeping in the buff.  Seven of the most carcinogenic chemicals on the planet are used to grow cotton, predominately in the developing world where there aren't safety regulations to keep the chemical use in check. By buying organic cotton from companies like People Tree you're keeping the farmers that grow cotton healthy (the chemicals that end up in your clothes land in their lungs first) and helping to protect the environment.  We mentioned this before but we'll say it again:  People Tree developed the first integrated supply chain for organic cotton from farm to final product and was the first company anywhere to achieve GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification on a supply chain entirely in the developing world.  These pajamas were made by Assisi Garments, a social enterprise in India. The skilled artisans at Assisi transform fair trade and organic cotton fiber into beautiful handmade garments like these.

LSTN
The Wireless Troubadour
$180

the stuff:

We've never felt cool in over-the-ear headphones.  Until now.  If you know a girl who loves music, or one who likes to tune the world out when she's reading/writing/working, these headphones from LSTN are the gift you've got to give.  The cherry wood panels look cool, but they sound even better--by putting their custom-designed 40mm neodymium drivers (we have no idea what those are, we just know that our playlist sounds really good) in a real wood housing, LSTN delivers a consistently awesome audio experience, whether your mom/girlfriend/sister/niece is jamming to music or catching up on her podcasts (who doesn't want Ira Glass coming in crisp and clean?).  Not sure she'll dig the over-the-ear style?  They've got earbuds too.

the story:

LSTN is a company with purpose: they want to change lives through the power of music. Proceeds from sales of all LSTN products go towards giving hearing aids to people in need worldwide through LSTN's charity partner, Starkey Hearing Foundation.  And they don't just give money; LSTN sends team members on trips with to bring hearing aids to children and adults in communities that need them.  A recent trip to Arequipa, Peru brought over 1,000 hearing aids to people there.  Reading about a little girl named Marisela who heard music for the first time after getting a bone-conducting hearing aid gave us full body goosebumps.  It's hard not to think about her every time we put these headphones on now.  That's worth the price tag right there.

RUMI
Earth Yoga Mat
$109

19227769_1455908334476332_70427993251512320_n.jpg

the stuff:

A yoga mat unlike any yoga mat she's used before.  You can put that in the card that goes with the Earth mat from Rumi.  Or you can just let her see and feel the top surface (it's woven with a subtle texture that makes it easy to grip but is still smooth enough not to wreck her flow) and then tell her that you've changed her life because this yoga mat can be machine washed.  Yes.  Machine washed.  In a washing machine.  No more overpriced mat cleaning sprays!  No more stressing that she set her mat down in the bathroom and it unrolled across the bathroom floor! (no? just us?) If your girl's a true yogi, this mat's fold-not-roll design might throw her.  But it won't be long until she realizes that unlike a rolled one, a folded mat will fit into her work bag...so no one at the office will have any idea that she's sneaking out for an evening class...

the story:

The owner and creator of Rumi wanted earthy, natural products for his own yoga and meditation practice.  Unlike other yoga mats, Rumi mats are completely biodegradable.  That means that when you're done using your mat, you can throw it outside and it'll reintegrate into the Earth.  We haven't tried it yet (we're still using our mat and can't imagine ever giving it up), but we love knowing that if we ever stop sun saluting, our mat won't end up in a landfill.  We bet the girl you give this to will appreciate that, too.

PURPOSE JEWELRY
Chevron Necklace in Bronze
$36

the stuff

We get it.  Jewelry is a tough gift to give.  This necklace from Purpose Jewelry makes it easy.  The simple yet interesting design (did you know that the chevron dates back as early as 1800 BC?) jives with a variety of styles and can be dressed up or dressed down.  The muted bronze looks great with pretty much everything and can be worn with silver or gold or both at the same time if the lady in your life wants to layer on (in case you missed the memo, mixing metals is a-ok).  The main reason to gift this necklace, though, is the story behind it.  This piece was handcrafted by a survivor of human trafficking and 100% of the proceeds from your purchase will go to International Sanctuary benefiting girls and women escaping human trafficking.

the story:

Purpose Jewelry is setting women free.  Young women escaping human trafficking are playing a critical role in every step of their production process, from creation to shipping.  But Purpose does more than merely give these women a job; holistic care is provided through their non-profit, International Sanctuary, and includes education, health care, and counseling. Their program provides every woman they employ with life skills and support to live a full, free life.

AMOUR VERT
Classic Biker Jacket
$278

the stuff:

A black leather jacket is a high risk, high reward gift.  If you get it right, you'll have bought yourself a free pass for at least the next three years.  But there are so many ways to get it wrong.  The good news is, there are lots of options out there for a variety of budgets.  The bad news is, there are lots of options out there for a variety of budgets--i.e., so many styles to choose from, it's hard to know what your wife/girlfriend/daughter might want.  Save yourself the headache and get her the Classic Biker Jacket from Amour Vert.  Designed by Deadwood in Stockholm, Sweden, this BLJ is cool without trying too hard (i.e., some silver hardware, but not too much) and the fit is boxy but not bulky.  Best of all, it's made of recycled leather from vintage garments, which means no cow was killed to make the girl on your list look fab. (If you're looking for a vegan leather version, try the Dauntless Moto 1 Quilted Biker Jacket--we haven't tried it on but we've heard great things!)

the story:

San Francisco-based Amour Vert (the name means "Green Love" in French) uses non-toxic dyes, sustainable fabrics, and a zero-waste philosophy to create fashion-forward clothing and accessories that are made in the U.S.A.  Their classic pieces are particularly good for women who need business casual clothes for work.  There are many ethical fashion companies that are making casual basics, but Amour Vert is one of the few we've found that makes on-trend dressier pieces without high-fashion prices.
