THE GIVING KEYS
Classic Key Necklace
$42

the stuff:

We're not saying you should give this key necklace to someone with a note saying 'Here's the key to my heart' but we're also not not saying that.  We think of these as an updated version of the friendship bracelets we used to make at summer camp.  Perfect for a best friend, your mom, or even your boyfriend (or all three). Each necklace is unique--all of the keys used to make them are repurposed and crafted by people transitioning out of homelessness--and there are fifteen different words to choose from, which means you'll definitely spend a good two hours stressing over which one to pick.  Just add a "Breathe" key to your cart for yourself when you're done and consider it a $42 therapy session.  Money well spent.

the story

Giving Keys is all about paying it forward. Their business model has so many layers of inspiration built in, we can't even keep track of them all. First, through the actual key, which is meant to be worn for a time and then passed on to someone else who needs the word engraved on it. And second, through the story behind the keys-- the men and women transitioning out of homelessness who are gaining meaningful employment through crafting these little works of art. As of this writing, The Giving Keys has generated 108,413 hours of work for people transitioning out of homelessness, and the tally continues with every purchase.

Color + Pattern: 50 Playful Exercises for Exploring Pattern Design
by Khristian A. Howell
$18

the stuff:

A book that both looks good and is useful. Color + Pattern: 50 Playful Exercises for Exploring Pattern Design by artist and designer Khristian Howell will brighten up any coffee table--if you leave it closed, which you absolutely shouldn't.  This book is meant to be used. It has a flexible, board cover, so it isn’t quite as substantial as a hardcover coffee table book, but we actually love that--our toddler barely screamed when he dropped it on his foot. And, because it's not heavy, whoever you gift it to can bring it along wherever their holiday travels take them for fun and creative exercises in the world of surface and pattern design.  What the hell is "surface and pattern design?" you ask.  In a nutshell, it's the art of putting colors and patterns together in a way that doesn't make other people want to hurl.  Yeah, you should probably do the world a favor and get yourself one, too.

the story:

Khristian A. Howell is a color and pattern expert who fuses her eclectic range of styles into bold designs for product and spaces, from bright throw pillows to patterned phone cases to fun holiday wrapping paper.  Intuitive and energetic in her approach, Khristian plays with ideas of hard and soft, light and dark, feminine and masculine to create depth and interest in her designs.  Her blog, KAH Living, is an awesome resource of design ideas from a true pro, whose motto is "Fearlessly Chic."  And she is.  Effortlessly.

FARMHOUSE POTTERY
Silo Soup Mug
$34

the stuff:

Sturdy and beautifully colored – think morning fog on a cozy, gray day – this piece of handcrafted stoneware will definitely become a favorite of whomever you gift it to.  Big enough for soup or cereal but begging to hold a really pretty latte, this wheel-thrown mug is an ideal present for the minimalist in your life.  She can use it for coffee in the morning, noodles at lunch, and ice cream late night (then throw it in the dishwasher, because it's top rack safe!)

the story:

Farmhouse Pottery is the largest pottery studio in America and is growing every year, adding full-time potters and new products, everything from wheel-thrown stoneware to cheeseboards to handcrafted jewelry, all made in the U.S and all reflecting Farmhouse's commitment to simplicity, process and authenticity.  And, if you’ve ever wanted to fulfill that dream of moving to the country and learning to throw pottery on a wheel, Farmhouse offers workshops at their flagship in Woodstock, Vermont.

DELLA
Purple Soaring 13” Macbook Case
$48

the stuff

You know that friend who has the inexplicably pristine laptop with no screen smudges or crumbs in the keyboard? How does she do it? She probably has one of these (but a way less cool version, so you should buy her this one to replace it.)  The Della MacBook case will help keep all your friend's laptops looking fresh--almost as fresh as you'll look carrying one of these cool graphic patterns into the coffee shop. Oh, did we forget to mention you should probably also buy one for yourself?  We love knowing that these were handcrafted by women in Ghana and imagining the story behind every stitch.

the story:

Della is a Los Angeles-based fashion line that is changing the way people shop.  Woman-owned and run, Della partners with women in Ghana, West Africa to handcraft all of their products. These women are offered an opportunity to use their skills and creativity in crafting Della's wares. Love adding one more brand to our list of companies that recognize the need for a global market that provides socially-responsible, quality products. In Della's own words:  "We are not a charity; we are a business done – and doing – 'right.'"

PHLUR
Fragrance Sampler Set
$18

the stuff:

Have a friend who's been mentioning that they are trying to find a new signature scent? Or just likes to smell good and say fun words like Phlur? This sampler set comes with three 2mL bottles and will set him or her on the right track. Phlur has a little something for everyone - choose from a wide variety of interesting scent profiles, like the refreshing Greylocke (notes of sea salt, bergamot, birch leave, silver vetiver and pine resin), the heavier Siano (green pepper, ylang ylang, osmanthus, mimosa and cognac) or the floral Hanami (fig, white florals, hazlenut and sandalwood). And if your friend ends up loving one enough to eventually buy a full size when they run out, they have a pretty awesome bottle and packaging to look forward to. Pro tip: If they buy a full bottle using your account within 30 days of the sampler purchase, they can apply the $18 towards the price of a full bottle! (P.S. if you're wondering why you should be a conscious consumer when it comes to perfume, give their very informative ingredients page a read.)

the story:

Phlur's vision for their perfume covers all the bases: ethically sourced ingredients, beautiful eco-conscious packaging, no celebrity-based propaganda, and-- best of all--it just smells AMAZING. Not only does Phlur leave all the toxic junk out, they publish their full list of ingredients (rare for a perfume company), and do not use any materials on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Red List of threatened plants. Their opaque bottle, made with an industry-leading 20% recycled glass, protects scents from light and thus eliminates the need for synthetic stabilizers, and their packaging uses vegetable-based paint, so we can recycle it after use. More than 1% of their annual net revenues are donated to environmental organizations, and the company regularly holds all-team service days in their hometown of Austin, TX. So now we don't just want to wear their perfume, we want to work at their company. We'll wait for your call, Phlur.
